February 24, 2016 - Employment Education Night

Steve Jones will be our speaker presenting the current labor market conditions and tips and tricks for standing out in a highly competitive job environment. A confident business professional with a strong business acumen, Steve has held positions within market-leading global companies in a variety of industries including IT/Telecoms, HRO/BPO's, Business Services, Pharmaceuticals and Recruitment/Resourcing.

Steve is currently the branch manager for Robert Half International the world’s first and largest specialized staffing firm specializing in Accounting, Finance, Administration, and Information Technology.

  • Writing and editing resumes to make them effective

  • Helpful job search methods and tricks

November 12, 2015 - Wine Appreciation Night

The Wine Education event was a lot of fun.  We had a lovely roast beef and tikka masala buffet dinner to start things off.  Wayne Sum, our member and apparently resident sommelier, was engaging and educated us about all sorts of aspects of wines from BC white to Portuguese port.  There were great questions from the attendees and even though I’ve been to one of these hosted by Wayne before, I learned even more about wine characteristics and that a screw cap is NOT a bad thing!

After Wayne’s well received talk on wine, there was a presentation on “the Power of Thank You”.  With the economic downturn and job uncertainty, it seemed a timely reminder to appreciate and encourage our staff.  Based on a study done by an HR firm, it is critical to acknowledge our employees’ little successes to keep their performance at a peak.  Productivity always improves when we feel appreciated, but often as managers, we are busy and forget to recognize the “little things”.  To help your company or department get there, remember to:

  • Focus on the positive
  • Take advantage of the moment
  • Communicate
  • Say “thank you”

We followed this with a brief demonstration on our member benefit, Management Direct.  There were some great comments about the content in Management Direct’s incredibly vast database of catalogued periodicals, company analyses (DataMonitor and SWOT) for large corporations around the world, along with general information about pretty well anything one would want to seek, whether for themselves or as a learning tool for an employee.  We plan to include this demonstration at each event to help broadcast the value this benefit brings our members.  

 

September 17, 2015 - Value of Professional Affiliation

Geoff Stephenson was our speaker.  He did a presentation on the value of professional affiliation.  After that was a quick demo of Management Direct since several of the attendees may not have seen the value of this member benefit, my personal favourite.  Valerie presented the re-accreditation certificate to SAIT at the end.
